By Abigail Simpson:
As I write this, I have officially entered my second month with Five not 10! So, as I’ve started to dive deep into my accounts, as well as the Five not 10 approach of keeping things simple, I guess it’s time to introduce myself properly!
My name is Abby Simpson, and I’ve joined the team as an Account Manager. I have a strong background in B2B tech and have managed numerous accounts across different sectors including cyber security, storage, HR tech and supply chain management.
Beyond the basics, here are five facts about me you might want to know…
1. I have a background in history
Before I found my passion in PR, my first love was history. I graduated from the University of York with a Master’s Degree in Early Modern History, which covers the period 1500-1700. So, yes, I will happily ramble on about the Tudors if given a chance – you’ve been warned.
The part I enjoyed most about studying history was that it allowed me to be creative with my writing, which is why I’ve taken to PR in the way I have. And speaking of PR…
2. I have been working in B2B tech since I graduated
Bar a small interlude between my degrees where I managed a sushi restaurant, I have worked in B2B tech PR pretty much my entire working life. Once I graduated from my MA, I went straight into a graduate job for a tech PR agency and I’ve been in the field ever since.
I also love being able to have a career in which cultivating relationships with my team, clients and the media is integral – I think this is because I’m a people person. Some may argue it’s because I love to chit chat… I’ll let you be the judge.

3. Why I chose to join Five not 10
Firstly, the team. Something that drew me to Five not 10 in the first place was the weight the team placed on cultivating a great workplace environment. You can feel the support from the moment you start. The agency places a huge emphasis on ensuring new starters feel welcome and it’s allowed me to have an incredibly smooth transition into this new role.
My first week consisted of so many 1-2-1s with the team which made me feel like part of the group straight away, while learning a lot about everyone… I won’t spill everything, but I will leave you with this: fleeces are a hotly debated topic here.
Secondly, remote work. I wanted to find an agency that I could be a part of for the long term, but I also didn’t want to feel tied down to a certain area at this point in my life. Working remotely allowed me to commit to a new role and simultaneously have the freedom to move around if I want.
4. My role at Five not 10
It’s hard to describe an average day as a PR consultant because it changes all the time. But, in essence, I’ll be acting as the day-to-day contact for my clients, helping them develop and execute PR strategies with the overall goal of improving brand awareness, promoting positive reputations and raising visibility around their products and services. I’ll be spending most of my days drafting content and developing those crucial media relationships.
5. How I spend my free time
I love a movie. Good and bad. I’m currently working my way through a “100 films you have to see before you die”. The best so far are Shutter Island (my favourite film of all time) and A Beautiful Mind. I don’t usually cry at films, but I sobbed at the ending.
I also like painting and making clay pots. I especially enjoy making them for my friends and family, so if you have a request, please send it my way!
